NiSi Filters System Review

On one of my winter talks in camera clubs around Ireland I met Gareth Loughran from Filters for camera.com who introduced me to new NiSi 150mm Filter System for the Nikon 14-24mm. This mighty super wide angle lens is my favourite lens to shoot the Irish coastline. At time I was using Fotodiox Wonderpana system which I wasn’t very happy with. Gareth offered me take the opportunity to try out the filter holder with a few ND’s and CPL. So here I am a couple of months later with some experience with the NiSi system in the field

I’m currently using these Nisi products:

  • Nisi 150mm HD CPL V2 Circular Polariser Filter
  • Nisi 150mm 10 Stop ND Neutral Density Filter AR ND1000 (3.0)
  • Nisi 150mm 6 Stop ND Neutral Density Filter AR ND64 (1.8)
  • Nisi adaptor ring for Nikon 14-24mm to 77mm

Nisi 150mm filter holder system for Nikon 14-24mm with ND 10 stopper and 77 mm adaptor ring + 67mm step down ring for my Nikon 70-200mm f/4

The filter holder itself is made from aluminium and is of a very good quality. The head of the filter is turnable for CPL usage and turning feels smooth with little resistanse like zooming with pro lenses. This filter holder can take up two 150mm squere filters without vigneting. I never tried to shoot with two as I ussually shoot long exposure landscapes with one ND inserted or one CPL

What I really like on this filter holder design is how quick I can attach the filter on the lens and then remove it. Sometimes when I must switch gear and positions quickly I found this very handy. its also great for composing when I shoot with ND 10 stopper. I can compose and then very quickly fit the filter and shoot. After the shot is taken I can remove the holder very fast from lens and put the camera to my backpack without any adjustments of space for large filter 150mm system (which was impossible with the Wonderpana system).

Another great thing about Nisi System is their little adaptor ring for Nikon 14-24 to 77mm which can be used to fit my 150mm system to any 77 mm and smaller lens with just step down adapter ring

Filters have to be slid into the holder before attaching on lens. Once the holder is attached on lens there are two screws on each side which in turn tighten two rubbery padded semi-circles around the hood of the lens. Screw hold well but I wouldn’t recommend to walk around with camera and tripod on shoulder when filters are on.

Long exposure seascapes are my favorite shots and since I have been using 10 stoppers I always had some issues with it. I used to have some problems with very dark edges and sometimes wierd warm color cast on my old set up with Nikon 16-35mm and B+W 77mm MRC 3.0/1000x (110) filter so I was curious how the new NiSi will perform on field

Nisi ND’s feature sealing around the edges which stop the light leaking from side. The very long exposures pictures come up with off white balance which is pretty normal with big stoppers but once I fix the white balance there is no significant color cast.
